Why these countries

Switzerland and Norway are among the EU's closest trading partners but aren't in the EU's VIES system, so their VAT numbers can't be checked there. This lookup goes straight to their official registers: the Swiss UID register run by the Federal Statistical Office, and the Norwegian Register of Legal Entities at Brønnøysund. Both also say whether the company is registered for VAT. For the UK, Companies House shows whether a company is active, dissolved or in liquidation.
