Norwegian VAT number
Format, example and a free check against the official register.
Norwegian VAT numbers are checked in the national register, not VIES. Check a Norwegian number in the company lookup: it confirms whether the company is registered for VAT and returns its name and address.
Format
| Local name | organisasjonsnummer with the MVA suffix |
|---|---|
| Prefix | NO |
| Format | NO followed by the 9-digit organisation number and MVA |
| Format example | NO123456789MVA |
| Checked in | The national business register |
Examples show the format only; they aren't real registrations. Spaces, dots and dashes are ignored when checking.
Good to know
- Norway isn’t in the EU, so its numbers aren’t in VIES: they are checked in the Brønnøysund register (Enhetsregisteret / Merverdiavgiftsregisteret).
How to check a Norwegian VAT number
- Enter it with or without the NO prefix; spaces and punctuation don't matter.
- The check asks the official register in real time whether the number is currently valid.
- Compare the name with the company you're dealing with: a valid number that belongs to a different company is a common invoice-fraud trick.
Signed in, every lookup is saved with a PDF certificate you can show your auditor. To check many numbers at once, upload a spreadsheet, or use the company lookup API.
