Swiss VAT number

Format, example and a free check against the official register.

Swiss VAT numbers are checked in the national register, not VIES. Check a Swiss number in the company lookup: it confirms whether the company is registered for VAT and returns its name and address.

Format

Local nameUID with the MWST / TVA / IVA suffix
PrefixCHE
FormatCHE followed by 9 digits and MWST, TVA or IVA (the suffix is the language)
Format exampleCHE-123.456.789 MWST
Checked inThe national business register

Examples show the format only; they aren't real registrations. Spaces, dots and dashes are ignored when checking.

Good to know

How to check a Swiss VAT number

  1. Enter it with or without the CHE prefix; spaces and punctuation don't matter.
  2. The check asks the official register in real time whether the number is currently valid.
  3. Compare the name with the company you're dealing with: a valid number that belongs to a different company is a common invoice-fraud trick.

Signed in, every lookup is saved with a PDF certificate you can show your auditor. To check many numbers at once, upload a spreadsheet, or use the company lookup API.
